"Craters of the Moon", Idaho

On our way back from Yellowstone,  we stopped
at "Craters of the Moon"  National Monument in Utah.
There were over 1,000 square miles with
examples of almost every variety of
basaltic lavas as well as tree molds (cavities left by
lava-incinerated trees), lava tube (type of cave)
and many other volcanic features. Lava eruptions
created a rugged but scenic landscape that has forced
animals and plants to adapt. It was a weird,
scenic and hot landscape and we were happy to
continue on our journey, but glad we had made the stop.

Yellowstone - Where the deer and the buffalo roam!

Even with a two-day car journey totaling 18 hours our
trip to Yellowstone was one of the most amazing trips so far.
The park was established in 1872 as America's first national park.
and is home to grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elk and many other
animals. We had many early morning and evening escapades
armed with cameras and binoculars to see who and what
we could spot.. A book can never compare to seeing the
animals in their natural habitat. It was simply amazing!
We saw beavers, various types of birds and even some
wolves stalking a bison which had gotten hit by a car.
Whenever the bison would go down , the wolves would move
in, and the bison would get the strength and get back up.
We heard the bison eventually got away, when another pack
of wolves came back to claim their territory. We saw eagles in their nest.
We spend numerous times waiting for the bison to clear the road,
but we didn't mind. You just need to be patient. If you want to hurry,
don't go to Yellowstone. Didn't always enjoy watching the circle of
life but it was amazing to be able to share in a part of nature that
sometimes you can't even find the words to describe. We visited
Old Faithful and it was true to its name, though not quite as spectacular
as we anticipated. The mud pots were hot, stinky but another amazing
part of nature. The girls even caught fish which we had prepared and
enjoyed for dinner that evening.  It was an awesome and amazing trip!
